How much have the Week 1 numbers moved since July?

On Jul 19, 2026 we published an opening lines report off the same board, and it named 22 games across its four tables. Reading all 22 again today is the comparison below. It is the complete set that report named, not a selection made afterwards, which matters: the games were chosen in July by that report's own extremes rule, before anyone knew which of them would move.

Four weeks later, 16 of the 22 totals and 18 of the 22 spreads are exactly where they were. The median move in both markets is zero, the largest move in either is 1 point, and the favorite has not changed on any of the 17 games where the July report printed one.

Every game named by the Jul 19, 2026 report, 22 of them, re-read at 2026-08-16 06:20 PM ET. Spreads are magnitudes, so a move is a change in the size of the number rather than in which side is favored. The July report printed no favorite beside its closest-games table, so the side was checkable on 17 of the 22.

The board as a whole reads much the same. That report measured an average total of 45.8 across 75 games in the Sep 9 to Oct 11, 2026 window; the same window today holds 78 games with a total at an average of 45.96. It counted 11 games of 75 posted at 1.5 points or closer; today that window holds 15 of 78. Those are two different sets of games rather than one set measured twice, since the schedule window now carries 3 more games with a total up than it did in July, so the pair reads as two snapshots and not as a movement.

Why Week 1 is priced by 8 books and the rest of the season by 3

The board carries all 272 regular-season games, and the count of sportsbooks quoting each one is not flat across them. All 16 Week 1 games are quoted by 8 books. Across the other 256 games on the board the median is 3 books and the maximum is 4.

That is what a consensus number rests on, and it is why the Week 1 figures above are the firmest ones on the board a month out. A game quoted by 3 books has a consensus in the arithmetic sense, but it is a median of 3 opinions, and one book repricing moves it. The same reading taken in December, when every game is quoted by a full set of books, is a different measurement of a different thing.

Why a consensus spread can read 2.8

Our consensus is the median of the numbers the books post, not a number any one book posts. With an even count of books the median sits between the two middle values, so it can land somewhere no sportsbook is offering. Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs shows it: the consensus reads 2.8 because the 8 books are split across numbers on either side of it. A spread of that shape is a summary of a market, and the number available to you is the one your own sportsbook is showing.

The same caution applies to the moneyline column. Those prices are consensus too, and on 6 of the 16 Week 1 games the book offering the best price on the home spread has it hung on a different number than the consensus, which is the ordinary state of a market rather than a fault in it.

Frequently asked questions

When is NFL Week 1 in 2026?

On our board Week 1 runs Wednesday, Sep 9 to Monday, Sep 14, 2026. It opens with New England Patriots at Seattle Seahawks at 8:15 PM ET, carries 13 games on Sunday, Sep 13, and closes with Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, Sep 14.

What is the widest spread in NFL Week 1 2026?

Los Angeles Chargers by 10.5 over Arizona Cardinals, with a total of 46.5 and a moneyline of −600 on the home side, as of 2026-08-16 06:20 PM ET. The closest game on the board is Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans at 1.

Do NFL lines move much before Week 1?

On the games we can check, not much. Of the 22 games our July 19 report named, 16 totals and 18 spreads were identical four weeks later, the median move in both markets was zero, and the largest single move was 1 point. That is one four-week window on 22 games, not a general law about NFL markets.

Is the consensus line the price I will get?

No. The consensus is the median across the 8 books our board carries for Week 1, so it can sit between two posted numbers and no book is obliged to offer it. The board also lists the best posted price per side, and your own sportsbook is the only number you can actually take.

Does Nebula Insights publish a pick on these games?

No. This page reports the market's own numbers with the date they were read attached. We publish no picks, no selections and no recommended wagers, here or anywhere on the site.
