Which 2026 NFL rookies will actually start?
Every August the same sentence gets written about a rookie: he steps into a big opportunity. It is usually built backwards, from the size of the hole his team left at his position. That is the easy half. The hard half is the name of the man standing in it.
What follows is twelve rookies from across the whole draft, from the first choice to the 251st, each one measured against the room he actually walked into. Under every name is a line generated straight from the roster: who left, what they produced last season, where they went, and who is still standing there. Roster facts are from our own archive as of 2026-08-05. Every camp report and every grade is attributed to the outlet that filed it.
A job genuinely waiting
These are the rookies whose path is clear on the roster and clear in the reporting. It is a shorter list than August usually suggests.
Sonny Styles, LB, Commanders, drafted 7th
Gone: Bobby Wagner (1,132 snaps, on no 2026 roster). Still there: Jordan Magee (364 snaps).
This is the cleanest inheritance in the class, and it is not close. Bobby Wagner played 1,132 snaps in the middle of Washington's defence last season and is on no roster in 2026. Washington signed nobody over the top of him. The linebackers who returned have 364 recorded snaps between them.
Ian Cummings of Pro Football Network graded the class A+ and called Styles the best player on his board, taken seventh. CBS Sports reports he steps directly into the role Wagner left. There is no competition to describe here, which is itself the story: Washington identified the one job it needed to fill and filled it with the highest-graded player available.
Spencer Fano, Tackle, Browns, drafted 9th
Gone: Cam Robinson (755 snaps, with Browns/Texans, on no 2026 roster); Jack Conklin (382 snaps, on no 2026 roster); Cornelius Lucas (292 snaps, on no 2026 roster). Dillon Thieneman, Safety, Bears, drafted 25th

A job the roster cannot see
The mirror image, and the honest limit of any roster-based reading. Here the roster says the room is full and the reporting says the job is open anyway.

A vacancy, but not a job
The distinction this article exists for. A team can lose an enormous amount of production at a position and still not hand the job to the rookie it drafted, either because it went shopping in March or because the rookie has not been on the field in August.
Makai Lemon, WR, Eagles, drafted 20th
Gone: A.J. Brown (1,028 yards on 128 targets, now with the Patriots); Jahan Dotson (262 yards on 37 targets, now with the Falcons). Still there: DeVonta Smith (1,078 yards on 124 targets); Marquise Brown (587 yards on 74 targets, with Chiefs); Dontayvion Wicks (332 yards on 46 targets, with Packers); Elijah Moore (116 yards on 18 targets, with Bills/Broncos).
The vacancy is real. 183 of the 498 targets Philadelphia threw last season belong to players who are no longer on the roster, and 128 of them were A.J. Brown's, who is now in New England. Jahan Dotson took another 37 to Atlanta. Philadelphia drafted the third receiver off the board to replace them.
Then two things happened that a vacancy cannot see. Philadelphia signed Marquise Brown, who caught 74 targets in Kansas City last season, and Dontayvion Wicks, who caught 46 in Green Bay. And Lemon got hurt. The Liberty Line had him working with the first-team offence on 2 August. Eight days later Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation wrote that Lemon had missed half the spring and half of training camp, that he had not done much on the days he did practise, and that it is fair to doubt he starts early in the season.
Neither report was wrong when it was written. That is the point. Behind DeVonta Smith and two veteran signings, a first-round receiver who has missed half of camp is not the same thing as 128 vacated targets, and Pro Football Network graded the class a C+ accordingly.
Jeremiyah Love, RB, Cardinals, drafted 3rd
Gone: Michael Carter (267 yards on 45 targets, 333 rushing yards, now with the Titans); Emari Demercado (101 yards on 20 targets, 312 rushing yards, now with the Chiefs). Still there: Tyler Allgeier (96 yards on 16 targets, 514 rushing yards, with Falcons); Trey Benson (64 yards on 16 targets, 160 rushing yards); James Conner (38 yards on 9 targets).

Sitting behind someone who is not moving
Two quarterbacks drafted in the first round, both behind a veteran their team put there on purpose.
Ty Simpson, QB, Rams, drafted 13th
Still there: Matthew Stafford (5,643 passing yards). Also drafted into the room: Matthew Caldwell.
The simplest capsule on this page. Matthew Stafford threw for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns in 17 regular-season games last season, won the Associated Press MVP award in the closest vote since 2003, and said on the podium that he is coming back. Nobody left the Rams quarterback room. Nobody was signed into it.
Simpson was drafted 13th to sit, learn, and take over on a schedule the Rams control. Any measurement that reports this as a missed opportunity has misunderstood what the Rams bought.
Fernando Mendoza, QB, Raiders, drafted 1st

Drafted into a room that came back
Cleveland used two of its first three choices on receivers and lost nobody of consequence at the position. Analysts liked the class anyway, which is a disagreement worth watching rather than resolving in August.

Uar Bernard, Eagles, drafted 251st
Philadelphia drafted Uar Bernard 251st overall. He has never played a snap of organised football in his life. He was noticed on a basketball court, worked out at football camps in Africa over three years, and arrived through the NFL's International Player Pathway.
Howie Roseman said the team wanted to take a chance on him and that it is going to take a lot of time. Expected minutes in 2026: none. That is not a failed selection, it is what the 251st choice is for. A roster spot at the very back of the draft costs almost nothing and the alternative is a fourth special-teams linebacker.
One honest note about our own data. Bernard is one of two draft slots that do not appear in the roster file this article is built from, because pathway additions carry a roster exemption. Everything above is from Philadelphia's own announcement and Roseman's remarks, not from our archive.

- Roster facts. Our own archive, from nflverse rosters, a single snapshot dated 2026-08-05 covering 2,924 players across 32 teams. Departures are players on a team's 2025 roster who are not on its 2026 roster; where they went is the 2026 roster they appear on.
- Production. The 2025 season including playoffs, 2025-08-01 to 2026-02-08, except the Stafford figure above, which is regular season only so that it matches the MVP citation. A player who changed teams is credited with what he did wherever he did it, and the page says which team that was.
- Coverage. 255 of 257 draft slots appear in the roster file. Slots 180 and 251 do not. One of them is Uar Bernard, whose International Player Pathway place carries a roster exemption. This is not a complete list of the class.
- Reporting. Camp status, depth chart ordering and draft grades are quoted from named outlets and dated where the date matters. Camp reporting has a short shelf life and this page says so where two outlets disagree.
- What this is not. Not a projection, not a ranking, and not connected to any betting market. No rookie in this class has played an NFL snap.

Unclear as of 10 August. Philadelphia lost A.J. Brown's 128 targets, but it also signed Marquise Brown and Dontayvion Wicks, and Bleeding Green Nation reports Lemon has missed roughly half of training camp.
Is Uar Bernard expected to play in 2026?
No. He had never played organised football before being drafted 251st, and Howie Roseman said it is going to take a lot of time.
